Accessibility at Crystal Castle

Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens is committed to being an accessible and welcoming destination for all guests, including those with disabilities, mobility needs, and dietary requirements.

Access & Inclusion Statement

Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens welcomes visitors of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. We want everyone who comes here to feel genuinely included, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

We’ve invested significantly in making our gardens more accessible, including building over one kilometre of sealed concrete pathways in 2024 and 2025. We know there’s more work ahead, and we’re committed to sharing honest, practical information so you can plan your visit with confidence.

Our ATIC Accessibility Assessment has been completed and our full Accessible Information Guide is available to view and download below.

Who we welcome

We actively consider the needs of guests with:

  • Limited mobility or who use wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or walking aids
  • Deaf or low hearing needs
  • Low vision or blindness
  • Sensory sensitivities or who are on the Autism Spectrum
  • Cognitive disabilities
  • Specific dietary requirements or food allergies
  • Temporary injuries or fatigue-related conditions
  • Companions, support workers, and carers

Companion Card is accepted. Service animals are welcome throughout all areas of Crystal Castle, including all indoor spaces, the Lotus Café, and garden pathways.

Getting here

Two designated accessible parking bays are located adjacent to our Welcome Hut, the closest point to the entrance with the most level route. A drop-off zone is available nearby for guests who need to be dropped close to entry.

Crystal Castle is located in the Byron Bay hinterland. Direct public transport is not available. We recommend private vehicle or shuttle services from Byron Bay. Our car park team is present during busy periods and can direct you to the accessible bay on arrival.

Moving around the gardens

Our sealed concrete pathway network connects all major attractions across the site, including the Buddha Walk, World Peace Stupa, Giant Treasure Chest, Crystal Labyrinth, Peace Dome, Lotus Café, and Castle Jewels. The main pathway network is 1200mm-1800mm wide throughout.

Crystal Castle is a self-guided, self-paced experience, no queues, no timed sessions other than our Daily Experiences. You move at your own pace and rest whenever you need to. Seating is available at regular intervals along all accessible routes.

Due to our hillside location, some sections of pathway exceed a 1:14 gradient. All steep sections are clearly signed so you can make informed decisions about your route. Some secondary garden paths are gravel or stepped. The Bamboo Avenue and Rainforest Walk are accessible by stairs only and are clearly separate from the sealed pathway network.

A free printed Accessibility Map is available at our Welcome Hut. Your Welcome Hut team can advise on the best route for your individual needs.

Accessibility by need

Limited mobility and wheelchair users Our sealed pathway network is the recommended route for guests using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or walking aids. Ramps are provided to all major indoor spaces. We recommend power wheelchairs or sturdy manual chairs for the most comfortable experience on our hillside pathways. Some ramp gradients exceed the 1:14 standard due to our hillside location, these are signed accordingly. The accessible toilet door is 800mm wide with 1300mm clear space in front and handrails fitted. Chairs in the Lotus Café are moveable to accommodate wheelchair users at all tables.

Deaf and low hearing Our site is largely self-guided and visual. Information and maps are available in written format, and our 80-page printed guidebook covers all major attractions. Staff at the Welcome Hut are happy to communicate via written notes or tablet. We do not currently have hearing loops on site. Facilitated experiences in the Peace Dome (Crystal Singing Bowls, Crystal Meditation) are delivered verbally, written overviews of these experiences are available in our guidebook.

Low vision Our Welcome Hut team can read information aloud and assist with navigation. Easy-to-read signage is used throughout the site. We do not currently offer Braille maps or guides. The Peace Dome and Lotus Café have even, glare-free lighting. Our 80-page guidebook provides written descriptions of all major attractions and crystal displays.

Sensory and Autism Spectrum Crystal Castle is a sensory-rich environment. The gardens are naturally quiet and unhurried outside of peak Public Holidays and Summer School Holidays, and our self-paced format means there is no pressure and no crowds around individual attractions. Our facilitated experiences in the Peace Dome, including Crystal Singing Bowls and Crystal Meditation, are calm, immersive sessions with seating provided. We have plain English documentation throughout. We do not currently offer dedicated quiet hours, but guests are welcome to visit during quieter periods (we recommend weekday mornings or afternoons outside of School Holidays) and to ask our team for guidance. Dietary requirements The Lotus Café offers a seasonal menu with vegetarian, vegan, sugar free, and dairy free options clearly labelled. We also cater for additive-free requirements. We do not operate a dedicated allergen-free kitchen, guests with severe allergies or coeliac disease are encouraged to speak with our team on arrival.
