At Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens, we’re deeply committed to being a force for good for the Earth, our community, and all who visit. Every decision we make is guided by a desire to minimise harm and create positive impact.
Crystal Castle is a Sustainable Tourism Accredited business and has completed the Tourism Emissions Reduction Commitment Program.
We are caretakers of a precious natural environment. Our 25-acre property is lovingly cared for through sustainable land management practices and regenerative design.
Rainforest regeneration
Our Rainforest Walk is a lush one-kilometre trail through thriving, regenerated rainforest – a sanctuary for local wildlife and native plant species.
Since 2006, in collaboration with Rainforest Rescue and passionate community volunteers, we’ve planted over 7,000 rainforest trees on the Crystal Castle grounds. With this planting, we estimate that another 7,000 trees have naturally regenerated, creating a flourishing ecosystem of approximately 14,000 trees.
Organic gardens and composting
We grow seasonal produce in our organic gardens for our Lotus Cafe, compost all organic waste on site, and have eliminated single-use plastics across our Cafe operations. These daily practices reduce our waste footprint and keep our connection to the land genuine and grounded.
Self sufficiency with water
We have invested significantly in roof, gutter, water catchment, and water storage infrastructure, making Crystal Castle 100% self-sufficient in water supply. We capture over 1.6 million litres of rainwater annually, used across our gardens, cafe, and general operations. We are completely off mains water. The entire project was delivered by local businesses, keeping every dollar in our region.
Solar powered and low voltage lights
Crystal Castle is powered in part by our onsite solar panel system, reducing our reliance on grid electricity. We’ve also installed low-voltage LED lighting throughout the property, which cuts energy consumption and protects the natural ambiance of our gardens after dark.
As part of our Tourism Emissions Reduction Commitment through Carbonhalo, we’ve completed a full emissions assessment and developed a plan to further reduce our energy footprint.
Zero-emissions electric vehicles
Over 70% of our onsite vehicles are electric, including ‘Toto’, our zero-emissions eTuatara UTV. The electric fleet handles the daily demands of our hillside landscape with no fuel costs and no exhaust emissions.
Crystal Castle is built on a foundation of heart. We care deeply for our team, our guests, and our wider community.
Our team of 50 dedicated locals is supported through regular check-ins, and training to capacity build.
Every year we donate over $27,500 in vouchers, crystals, jewellery, and financial support to 54+ local schools, fundraisers, charities, and community groups, including the Mullumbimby Women’s Centre, Make a Wish Foundation, Daniel Morcombe Foundation, and Queer Family Inc.
Through the Crystal Castle & King Family Fund, a sub-fund of the Northern Rivers Community Foundation (NRCF), we provide sustained support for the people, animals, and environment of the Mullumbimby area. The NRCF, of which the Crystal Castle & King Family Fund is a part, supported 21 grant recipients in the past year at a value of over $327,000.
We are long-time supporters of causes aligned with our values of mental health, sustainability, First Nations cultural respect, and women’s safety.
Crystal Castle is home to sacred spaces that honour traditions from around the world. Our World Peace Stupa, originally created under the guidance of the Gyuto Monks of Tibet, is a sacred monument in Tibetan Buddhism symbolising universal peace.
During 2024–25, we invested in restoring and repainting the original Stupa, built in 2012. This restoration led to the Gyuto Monks of Tibet holding a month-long program at Crystal Castle in October 2025, including teachings, workshops, meditations, and a Harmonic Chanting fundraising concert. It was a significant moment, while the Monks have previously visited Australia, their programs are typically based in major cities.
The Shambhala Gardens, Buddha Walk, Damanhur Spiral, and Reflexology Walk each draw on living cultural and spiritual traditions. We approach this responsibility with care, ensuring these spaces remain places of genuine reflection rather than decoration.
With the same suppliers for nearly 40 years, we source every product in our boutique with purpose and care. Our crystals, jewellery, and sacred objects are selected through trusted, ethical supply chains, prioritising fair wages, low-impact sourcing, and artisan partnerships that respect cultural traditions.
We have an approved modern slavery statement, signed by our Director, and maintain a register of approved suppliers who have each signed modern slavery statements and completed questionnaires verifying their supply chains. All overseas suppliers are paid award wage or above. This is backed by third-party due diligence conducted by our team.
Our retail offering is a curated collection of rare crystals, hand-carved treasures, and sacred objects that reflect our values of care, integrity, and sustainability.
Approximately 50% of our suppliers are local to the Northern Rivers region, and based on regional tourism multipliers, Crystal Castle generates an estimated $5.4 million in economic benefit for the region annually.

Our commitment to responsible tourism is ongoing. We continue to measure, refine, and improve every part of how Crystal Castle operates.
